The MACC, in partnership with the City of Holland, the Ottawa County Water Resources Commissioner, and the Allegan County Drain Commissioner, hosted a green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) seminar at the Haworth Inn and Conference Center on August 22, 2017. The seminar drew engineers, consultants, municipal staff, planning commissioners, and interested citizens from throughout West Michigan.
The event focused on the importance of GSI and how it can be incorporated into site designs to help improve water quality as well as attain other social, economic and environmental benefits.
The program included the following presentations:
Making the Case for Green Infrastructure – Dan Christian, P.E. , D.WRE, Senior Water Resource Engineer and Project Manager, Tetra Tech
Making the Case for GI in Site Design – Donald Carpenter, Ph.D, P.E., LEED AP, Principal, Drummond Carpenter PLLC and Director, Great Lakes Stormwater Management Institute, Lawrence Tech University
Green Infrastructure Suitability and Prioritization in the Urban Holland/Zeeland Areas – Kelly Goward, Macatawa Watershed Project Manager, MACC and Brian Boyer, P.E., Environmental Engineering Manager, Kieser & Associates, LLC
The program also included a panel discussion about the drivers and barriers to implementing GSI with Carrie Rivette, City of Grand Rapids; Jason VanderKodde, FTC&H; Erik Petrovskis, Meijer; Nathan Griswold, Inhabitect.

The seminar ended with a tour of GSI at Hope College. Participants were able to see bioretention at the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts, permeable asphalt in the Physical Plant parking lot, grass pavers at the Kruizenga Art Museum, and a newly installed PaveDrain system at the Bultman Student Center.
